Toximals
2021 D&AD Newblood Awards
In 2019, the UK was the second largest waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) producer per capita.
A group response to a brief given from giffgaff, highlighting their recycling program available and encouraging members to recycle their old phones in order to reduce WEEE.
Our response to giffgaff’s brief was driven by research, visualising the effects of electronic waste in a light-hearted, easy to understand narrative. ‘Toximals’ are fictional mutated animals, with antennas for ears, and buttons for eyes. Despite the light visuals used, the reality and damage that electronic waste is a serious issue, that could have long lasting effects on the environment. As e-waste breaks down, it releases toxic heavy metals such as lead and arsenic into surrounding soil, which can influence plants and trees that are growing. Thus, these harmful chemicals can enter animal and human food chains.
